How to Package Items for International Shipping

Proper packaging is the first and most crucial line of defense for your goods during international transit. Whether you are using air cargo or sea cargo, your package will be handled multiple times, loaded onto pallets, and exposed to movement. Follow these expert tips to ensure your items arrive in pristine condition.

1. Choose the Right Box

Always use a new, sturdy, corrugated cardboard box. Reused boxes lose their structural integrity and can easily collapse under the weight of other parcels. For heavier items, opt for double-walled or triple-walled boxes. Ensure the box is just the right size—too large, and the item will move around; too small, and the box might burst.

2. Wrap Items Individually

If you are shipping multiple items in one box, wrap each item individually using bubble wrap or foam sheeting. This prevents them from knocking against each other and causing internal damage. Fragile items should have at least two inches of cushioning on all sides.

3. Fill All Empty Spaces (Void Fill)

Once your items are in the box, fill any remaining empty spaces with void fill materials like packing peanuts, crumpled kraft paper, or air pillows. The goal is to restrict all movement. Close the box and give it a gentle shake; if you hear or feel movement, add more cushioning.

4. Use the H-Taping Method

Do not use standard household tape or masking tape. Use strong, pressure-sensitive packing tape that is at least 2 inches wide. Apply the tape using the "H-taping" method: seal the center seam of the box, and then tape along the two edge seams. This prevents the box from bursting open during transit.

5. Label Clearly and Accurately

Ensure that both the sender's and receiver's addresses are clearly printed and attached to the largest flat surface of the box. Remove any old labels if you must reuse a box. It is also a good practice to place a duplicate copy of the address label inside the box just in case the external label gets damaged.
